Lancaster County:

  • Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library
    Named in honor of George Washington’s mother, Mary. Visitors may tour historical buildings, view exhibits on the region’s history, participate in educational programs, and trace family histories.   • St. Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal Church
    Established in 1669 as the parish for Lancaster County. The Church building contains the oldest know altar tablets (Decalogue, Lord’s Prayer, and Apostles’ Creed) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a communion table and baptismal font from the Colonial era. The Ball family (George Washington’s maternal kin) were parishioners, and the extant gallery in the church was constructed for their use. The graveyard contains the graves of many historic families of the Northern Neck, as well as the 1940’s film star, Margaret Sullavan.
